After Dark. The city breathing in one long exposure.

About — the photographer

Marlo Vance

Seven shoots, made years apart, kept in one endless list. Photographer, printer, and keeper of the index.

I would rather lose the moment than spray at it. The index is what survived the walk home.

01 — The darkroom

She came to the camera late.

A darkroom job taken for the quiet turned into ten years of printing other people’s negatives. Marlo still edits the way a printer does: one frame at a time, in order, until the sequence holds. Nothing here was taken in a burst.

Hillside. Climbing out of the valley in the last good light.

02 — The walk

Most of it is just being early.

She works between Lisbon and the north Atlantic, moving between commissioned assignment and long unpaid walks that pay for themselves eventually. The seven categories are less genres than habits: seven ways of being early, or staying out far too late.

Emberfield. The field still holding the last of the heat.

03 — The archive

Frames are numbered before they are named.

Almost nothing is titled after the place it was taken. A photograph here answers to a position in a shoot before it answers to a story, which is why the index reads as a list and not a portfolio.

Playground. The city keeping one green rectangle.
